The car-jacking sparked a three-hour chase by Dubai Police officers as the Tanzanian thief drove recklessly around Dubai at high speed.
General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, the head of Dubai Traffic Police, said the Hyundai vehicle, which was a rental car, was pinched from the Asian man in the Al Twar area on Al Nahda Road.
Al Zafeen explained: “The victim was changing his tyre when the defendant offered to help him. After changing the tyre, the thief shocked the man by jumping in his car and driving away in the direction of Shiekh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.”
Cops said they tracked the Tanzanian and gave chase but he was able to escape.
“We kept searching and found him again on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road just before Al Warqa Bridge,” Al Zafeen added. “He didn’t stop and drove in a dangerous way.”
Police say the chase then took them from Business Bay to Al Garhoud and on to Airport Road.
“Our patrol cars surrounded him,” said Al Zafeen.
“He was driving in the left lane. A police vehicle drove in front of him and a second one beside him on the right and a third undercover police vehicle came from behind to trap him.”
The driver hit the police vehicle in front of him near the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel. He got out of the car and made a run for it. “Policemen chased him on foot for 700m and arrested him,” said the traffic cop.
“We recovered the car at 1.15am on Saturday.” The man will be charged with theft, resisting arrest and damaging property.
