P Rajeev MP has said that conducting another study for traffic
management at Edappally Junction is a waste of time. “Three studies have
already been conducted for regulating traffic here and a new one is
nothing but a waste of time and money,” he said during a meet at
Ernakulam Press Club.
He added that SNC Lavlin had conducted a study for National Highway Authority in India (NHAI) and recommended four flyovers at Edappally, Palarivattom, Vyttila and Kundanoor for smooth vehicular traffic in Kochi.
“In the report, it was recommended that a fund of Rs 1,450 crore be allotted for construction and land acquisition. Unfortunately, the proposal remains on paper. Similar study was conducted by INKEL and NATPAC a few year ago in which an elevated highway was recommended on the 16.8 km stretch from Edappally to Aroor.
In the study, development work worth Rs 8,168 crore was recommended which included a flyover at Edappally. But the government has not taken any decision on the proposal yet. A few year ago, the DMRC had conducted a study wherein a similar proposal was mooted. According to the proposal, the construction and land acquisition would cost around Rs 86 crore which is more feasible.
“If the government conducts another study, the Kochi Metro Project would have to wait till the study is completed. The civil work of the Metro has to be completed in two years time. The study conducted by DMRC is more practical as it is economical and part of the Kochi Metro Project work,” P Rajeev said.
Traffic Snarl
In a study conducted by NATPAC few years ago, it was found that a flyover is an immediate requirement to curb traffic snarl at Edappally. As per report, as many as 75,000 cars pass through the Edappally traffic signal. Among this, around 40,000 pass towards the bypass side and 35,000 to the Ernakulam side. About 1,500 heavy vehicle like truck and buses cross the signal every day.
