Tourism Walkway project to cost Rs 26 crore

The Walkway tourism project along the Old Mattancherry Bridge - Kundanoor stretch will be implemented in two phases at an estimated cost of Rs 26 crore.
Union Minister KV Thomas has directed the officials concerned to complete the construction of the walkway soon. Speaking at a meeting of officials at the Guest House here, KV Thomas said the stretch will be a major tourist attraction of the city in future.
The project cost for the initial phase will come to Rs 9 crore. Of this, the tourism department has already provided Rs 4 crore and BPCL Kochi Refinery has given Rs 1 crore. The Cochin Shipyard and Union Tourism Ministry are also expected to provide financial support for the project. The second phase of the project, has an estimated cost of Rs 17 crore.
 Once completed, the walkway will have seating facilities, play area for kids, parking lot and special lighting. The final draft for the project, to be implemented along the 2.7 km stretch, has been approved. Apart from the Minister, Mayor Tony Chammany, Hibi Eden MLA, Collector P I Sheik Pareeth and BPCL officials took part in the deleberations.
