Traffic curbs planned in cochin city

Thursday, March 28, 2013

The Kochi city police have taken steps to regulate traffic in the  city in the wake of Kochi Metro rail work which would start soon. As part of the curbs, the City Police have asked for more traffic  wardens. Changes will also be made in the bus routes.
According to the police, a feasibility study is being conducted for traffic diversion and vehicle density in the city.
Staff shortage
A major issue being faced by the police is the shortage of staff. To overcome this, the department will recruit more traffic wardens and hire home guards from the Fire and Rescue Department.
“The study on the regulations will be finished in two weeks' time. The  report would be shared with the Corporation, District Administration and KMRL. More policemen from the Armed Reserve Camp would be deputed along with more traffic wardens. There is a shortage of about 50 persons in the traffic wing and it would be filled soon,” the police officials said.
Construction work
The construction of the Metro rail will be conducted in different phases. In each phase, work will be carried out in 600-metre distance. “The major traffic regulation will be implemented when the work will start on the
Pallimukku-Edappally stretch. A master plan will be compiled soon,” the police officials said.
Work on MG Road
The police have charted plan for traffic regulations on MG Road when work begins there. The Metro and road-widening work will take place simultaneously on MG Road. The police will restrict the movement of heavy vehicles like buses and lorry through the area.
“All the vehicles, except cars and two wheelers, will be restricted. The private buses would be redirected through Banerjee Road and Marine Drive. With the commissioning of Salim Rajan ROB, KSRTC buses would be diverted through Kaloor, Kadavanthara and Salim Rajan ROB. KSRTC buses also can ply through Chittoor Road, Container Road and  Kadavanthara-Vytilla road,” the police officials said.
“We will take all necessary steps to control the traffic. We have given several proposals to higher authorities. All the departments have promised to support us with necessary assistance,” said K G James, Kochi City Police Commissioner.
