Private buses, notoriously known as red killers, continue to hound
the motorists by its rash driving on city roads, with a woman falling
their latest victim at Vazhakkala near Kakkanad on Wednesday.
The agitated mob vent ire on the bus, causing severe damage to it.According to police, the incident occurred around 11.30 am when Vasanthi V R, 56, of Kattungal house, Aluva, was run over by the bus. She was riding a scooter and was on her way to Palarivattom when the speeding bus from Kakkanad knocked her down and ran over her. She died on the spot. The bus driver and other employees fled the scene. However, local people alleged that the bus crew managed to escape as the police arrived late on the spot. However, the police said they have registered a case under Section 304 (Culpable Homicide) of IPC against the bus driver.
“Most of the private buses plying to Kakkanad pass through Vazhakkala at high speed. The police and Motor Vehicles Department squad never take action against these buses. People allege several such buses are owned by policemen and that is why no action is being taken,” Rajeevan Nair a witness of the accident said.
In 2012, the total number of accident deaths involving the private buses in the city was 19. In 2013, five cases of accident deaths involving private buses have already been reported by now. On Monday, police had arrested three bus drivers who were driving after consuming liquor. Around 512 cases for rash driving and drunk driving had been registered against private bus driver from January 2013 to March 2013.
“It is not right to say that police is not taking any action against the bus drivers. We have interceptors roaming across the city which daily register around 500 cases of rash driving. In March alone, we collected Rs 40 lakh as fine for drunk driving and rash driving. We have registered 25,000 cases in March alone,” K G James, City Police Commissioner said.
